NORFOLK, VA – The Norfolk Admirals will host the Albany River Rats on Wednesday and Friday nights this week at Scope to close out a five-game homestand.
The homestand began last Wednesday night when the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins defeated Norfolk 7-3. The Admirals bounced back on Friday night as Brandon Segal had a goal and two assists to lead Norfolk past Bridgeport 3-2. The Sound Tigers fought back on Saturday for a 6-4 defeat of the Admirals despite four assists from Steve Downie and a pair of goals from Justin Keller.
The homestand concludes with games against the Albany River Rats on Wednesday and Friday nights at 7:15 p.m. The Admirals then travel to Philadelphia for a 7:05 game against the Phantoms on Saturday night and do not play again until hosting the Phantoms back at Scope on December 27. EAST DIVISION STANDINGS At 9-19-1-4 (23 points), Norfolk sits in seventh place in the East Division. The Hershey Bears (20-7-0-1, 41 points) lead the division. Bridgeport (18-7-1-2, 39 points), Philadelphia (17-11-0-0, 34 points) and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (16-11-1-1, 34 points) currently occupy playoff positions. The Admirals welcomed their four-millionth fan since the team’s inception in 1989 on Saturday night.
The Admirals played their 700th regular season home game since the team’s inception in 1989 on Wednesday night. The Admirals are now 428-201-73 during the regular season at Norfolk Scope Arena for a 0.662 points percentage.
Norfolk plays 15 of their next 21 games at Scope.
Norfolk is the only team to have defeated Bridgeport twice in regulation this season.
The Sound Tigers, who entered their Friday-Saturday set against the Admirals with the fourth best power play in the AHL, went 0-10 on the power play in Norfolk.
The Admirals have killed 15 straight and 19 of the last 20 opponent power plays.
With four assists on Saturday against Bridgeport, Steve Downie has now tied the franchise record for assists in a single game both by a Norfolk Admiral and by a Norfolk opponent. He also netted four assists at Scope on October 29 while playing for the Philadelphia Phantoms.
Bracken Kearns has eight points (4G, 4A) in eight career games against Bridgeport.
Jay Rosehill has assists in three straight games (3A) for his first career AHL point streak.
Lightning draft picks Dana Tyrell and Dustin Tokarski have both been named to the roster for Team Canada at the 2009 World Junior Championships. Tyrell, who made his pro debut last March with the Admirals on an amateur tryout, signed a three-year, entry-level deal with the Lightning last week. Tokarski, a 19-year-old goaltender, was drafted in the fifth round by Tampa Bay last summer.
Former Admirals goaltender Craig Anderson now leads the NHL in save percentage (.940), is fifth in goals-against average (2.15) and is tied for second in shutouts (3). Anderson, who now plays for the Florida Panthers, appeared in 112 games with Norfolk from 2001-02 to 2004-05 and ranks second all-time in games, GAA (2.23) and shutouts (11) and third in wins (50) and save percentage (.911) in AHL Admirals history.
ADMIRALS RBK/AHL PLAYER OF THE WEEK NOMINEE Steve Downie: 2 GP, 0G, 6A, 6PTS, 4 PIM Steve Downie returned to Norfolk from NHL recall to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Friday and made an immediate impact on the Admirals. On Friday night, Downie assisted on the first goal of the game and the go-ahead goal in the third period in a 3-2 win over Bridgeport. Downie then assisted on all four goals for Norfolk in a 6-4 loss to the Sound Tigers. With his six assists last week, Downie now has 12 assists in eight games with Norfolk and 19 assists in 12 AHL games overall this season. His 1.50 points-per-game with Norfolk are the highest on the team, and his 1.67 points-per-game in the AHL this season are the most by any player in the top 100 of AHL scoring this season.
