NORFOLK, Va. – The American Hockey League’s top-ranked power play struck twice in the third period to break a 2-2 tie and lead the Binghamton Senators past the Norfolk Admirals 5-3 on Wednesday night at Norfolk Scope Arena.
The Admirals (27-354-3-5) claimed the lead with a power play goal midway through the first period. Zenon Konopka won a battle for the puck in the right corner and chipped a pass toward the goalmouth. Juraj Simek sent a shot from the doorstep between the left leg and glove of Binghamton goaltender Jeff Glass at 10:49 for his seventh goal of the season.
The Senators (37-24-5-3) tied the game at 1-1 midway through the second period. Mattias Karlsson sent a floating shot over the right shoulder of a screened Norfolk netminder Riku Helenius at 10:51.
Binghamton took a 2-1 lead less than five minutes later. Shawn Weller picked off a pass in the slot and fired a wrist shot between the legs of Helenius at 15:12.
However, Norfolk leveled the score at 2-2 less than two minutes later. Radek Smolenak entered the attacking zone along the left wing and sent a slap shot between the blocker and right leg of Glass for his twentieth goal of the season at 17:05.
Binghamton took the lead for good with a power play sequence early in the final frame. While skating with a five-on-three advantage, Derek Smith picked off a clearing attempt in the slot and sent a shot between the legs of a Norfolk defender and the legs of Helenius at 6:26.
Less than a minute later while skating with a one-man advantage, Greg Mauldin completed a two-on-one play by accepting a pass from Peter Regin in the left circle and firing a shot past Helenius at 7:05.
Regin added an additional insurance marker while skating four-on-four just over two minutes later. He stole the puck from an Admirals defender behind the goal line and centered it to Neil Petruic in the slot. Petruic’s shot rebounded to the right circle where Regin collected it and fired a quick shot into the net at 9:17.
Norfolk closed out scoring at 14:46 when Chris Lawrence picked up the rebound of a Pete Zingoni shot and beat Glass for his fifth goal of the season.
Riku Helenius (39 shots, 34 saves) was saddled with the loss. Jeff Glass (31 shots, 28 saves) picked up the win.
Norfolk was 1-3 on the power play. Binghamton was 2-7.
