Admirals Cruise to Winning Record with Fourth Consecutive Victory
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Blair Jones and Brandon Bochenski both had a goal and two assists as the Norfolk Admirals moved their season record to 7-6-0-0 and finished a perfect four-game road trip with a 6-1 victory over the Syracuse Crunch (4-6-2-1) on Saturday night at the Onondaga County War Memorial at Oncenter.
The victory moved the Admirals into a third-place tie with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in the American Hockey League’s tough East Division. It was also just the second time in the ten-season history of the Admirals in the AHL that Norfolk had a perfect four-game road trip and just the third time they won five consecutive road games overall.
The Admirals jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 58 seconds into the game. Dana Tyrell sped into the attacking zone along the left wing and sent a shot on Crunch goaltender Dan LaCosta. Paul Szczechura found the rebound and buried it for his fourth goal of the season.
Norfolk doubled its lead on the power play mid-way through the opening period. Mike Lundin sent a shot from the high slot that changed directions and eluded LaCosta on its way into the net at 9:31.
The Admirals offense exploded for four goals in the second period while out-shooting the Crunch 16-6. The barrage got underway just 2:18 into the frame. Brandon Bochenski sent a pass from the right half-wall into the slot and Juraj Simek sent a shot that trickled through the pads of LaCosta for his second goal of the season.
Just over three minutes later, Bochenski got on the board with his team-leading eight marker of the 2009-10 campaign. Blair Jones won a faceoff back to Vladimir Mihalik at the left point. Mihalik teed up a slap shot that deflected high into the air off of LaCosta and landed in the crease. Bochenski swept the puck into the net at 5:38. The goal chased Crunch netminder Dan LaCosta as Kevin Lalande came on to man the Syracuse net.
Norfolk took a 5-0 lead with Jones’ second goal of the season at 9:58. Bochenski threw a pass from the right circle that bounced toward the slot. Jones was able to corral the bouncing puck and fire it past Lalande.
The Admirals struck for a sixth marker late in the period. Matt Syroczynski powered into the attacking zone past defenders before feeding the puck to Adam Hall, who netted his second goal of the season at 16:49.
The Crunch got on the board at 17:51 as Dan Fritsche converted a Maksim Mayorov two-on-one feed from the bottom of the right circle.
However, that would be the last goal of the contest as the Admirals took the 6-1 victory.
Riku Helenius (21 shots, 20 saves) earned his second victory of the season. Dan LaCosta (20 shots, 16 saves) took the loss and played 25:38. Kevin Lalande (16 shots, 14 saves) did not receive a decision in 34:22 of play.
Norfolk was 1-8 on the power play. Syracuse was 0-4.
