Admirals Sign G Sims and D Case; Release G Kalemba
NORFOLK, Va. Ė The Norfolk Admirals today announced that they have signed goaltender Tyler Sims to a Professional Tryout Contract (PTO) and have signed defenseman Matt Case to an Amateur Tryout Contract (ATO). In addition, the Admirals announced that they have released goaltender Zane Kalemba from his ATO.
Sims, a 6-foot-0, 190-pound goaltender, has played for the ECHLís Elmira Jackals and Bakersfield Condors and the CHLís Mississippi RiverKings this season. He went 2-1-0 in four games with the Condors with a 2.62 goals-against average (GAA) and .917 save percentage (SV%). In six games with the Jackals, he posted a 0-3-1 record with a 2.47 GAA and .908 SV%. In two games with the RiverKings, he went 0-2-0 with a 5.17 GAA and .831 SV%.
The 24-year-old native of Fort Wayne, Indiana, appeared in the only game of his AHL career thus far with the Admirals last season, stopping five of six shots in relief on February 9, 2009 at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.
Sims spent four years at Providence College, going 44-56-10 with a 2.57 GAA and .909 save percentage from Sims 2004-08. He is the career record holder for games played (116) and shutouts (7) at Providence College. Sims was given the Lou Lamoriello Award as Providence College Team Co-MVP for the 2005-06 season. He was named a Hockey East Academic All-Star in 2004-05 and was named to the Hockey East All-Academic Team in 2006-07.
Case, a 5-foot-11, 183-pound defenseman, recently concluded his collegiate hockey career at Ferris State University. In 40 games this season, the 24-year-old native of Plymouth, Minnesota, scored four goals and 17 points, ranking second in goals and third in points among Bulldogs defensemen. In his four years at Ferris State, he compiled ten goals and 47 points in 144 games.
Kalemba served as the Admirals backup goaltender in each of the teamís last eight games and did not appear in a game.
The Admirals will play their final three road games of the 2009-10 regular season this weekend as they visit Albany on Friday, Binghamton on Saturday and Hershey on Sunday.
The Admirals will conclude their 2009-10 regular season with a three-game homestand beginning Wednesday, April 7 against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.
