Admirals Alumni Prevalent in NHL Conference Finals
NORFOLK, Va. – With the National Hockey League gearing up for its conference finals, several former Admirals figure to play prominent roles in the quest for the Stanley Cup.
The Western Conference finals pitting the Chicago Blackhawks against the San Jose Sharks has 16 former Admirals players represented while there are four former Admirals players are taking part in the Eastern Conference Finals between the Montréal Canadiens and the Philadelphia Flyers. Both series will begin tomorrow, with the Sharks hosting the Blackhawks at 3:00 p.m. and the Flyers hosting the Canadiens at 7:00 p.m.
Chicago Blackhawks defenseman Duncan Keith, who is a finalist for the NHL’s James Norris Trophy as the league’s best defenseman, has the most games played as an Admiral of any player remaining in the Stanley Cup Playoffs with 154 games from 2003-04 to 2004-05. Philadelphia Flyers goaltender Michael Leighton, who helped the Flyers become just the third team in NHL history to overcome a 3-0 deficit in a best-of-seven series by winning Game 7 last night in Boston, is the all-time leading goaltender in AHL Admirals history with 75 wins from 2001-02 to 2004-05.

In addition to those players in the NHL playoffs, two former Admirals are taking part in the American Hockey League’s Conference Finals. Dan Jancevski (37 GP, 2007-08) and Andrew Hutchinson (20 GP, 2008-09) are taking part in the Western Conference Finals as members of the Texas Stars hockey club (Dallas Stars affiliate). Their series began last night as they fell to the Hamilton Bulldogs (Montréal Canadiens affiliate) 3-2 in overtime. In the Eastern Conference Finals, the Hershey Bears (Washington Capitals affiliate) hold a 1-0 series lead over the Manchester Monarchs (Los Angeles Kings affiliate) heading into tonight’s Game 2 as they began their series on Wednesday night.
