The Revival of a Rivalry

NORFOLK, VA – After a pair of setbacks against the Portland Pirates at Scope last weekend, the Admirals will prepare for a home-and-home weekend matchup against the Charlotte Checkers this week. The two teams last met in the regular season in 2000 as members of the ECHL.

Last weekend, the Admirals suffered a pair of defeats at the hands of the Portland Pirates, albeit one in overtime and the other in a shootout. On Friday night, Derek Whitmore clinched the game with a goal in the fifth round of the shootout, giving the visitors the 6-5 victory. The following night, the Admirals saw a two-goal lead slip away as the Pirates battled back from a 6-4 deficit and score two goals in the ten minutes of the third period. Portland's Marc-Andre Gragnani ended the game 1:05 into overtime, giving the Pirates the 7-6 victory.

This weekend's matchup consists of the first two of twelve meetings between the Admirals and the Checkers this season. The teams met twice during the pre-season, with each team winning on the opponent's home ice. The Admirals travel to Charlotte for a Friday night game. Both teams will then head to Norfolk for a Saturday evening matchup at Scope. On Saturday afternoon, the Admirals Fall Puck Crawl will take place, with a portion of the proceeds going to the Memorial Fund for Officer Victor Decker. For more information, please see below.
