Admirals Work Overtime to Finish Road Trip 5-1-0-0
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Mike Vernace’s second goal of the game 1:43 into overtime gave the Norfolk Admirals (15-6-3-1) a 3-2 victory over the Springfield Falcons (12-12-1-1) on Sunday afternoon at the MassMutual Center. The Admirals finished their season-high six-game road trip with a 5-1-0-0 record and will return to Scope on Wednesday night to play the Syracuse Crunch.
Alex Berry also scored for Norfolk while goaltender Dustin Tokarski stopped 22 of 24 shots for the victory.
The Falcons opened scoring on former Admiral Mike Blunden’s power play goal 14:27 into the first period. Defenseman Cody Goloubef sent a pass from the top of the right circle to Blunden at the bottom of the left circle. Blunden sent a one-timer past the right leg of Tokarski for a 1-0 Springfield lead.
Norfolk tied the game at 1-1 late in the second period. Chris Durno sent a pass from behind the goal line near the right corner to Vernace at the right half wall. Vernace sent a shot off the far post past the right toe of Falcons goaltender David LeNeveu at 18:01 for his first goal of the game.
The Admirals took a 2-1 lead on Berry’s power play goal 11:35 into the third period. Blair Jones sent a high wrist shot from the right point. Berry, who had his back to the net while stationed in the slot at the right hashmarks, deflected the shot down and past LeNeveu for his seventh goal of the season.
Springfield tied the game with only 19.5 seconds left in regulation. Grant Clitsome attempted a shot from the right point that was blocked by the Admirals. The loose puck ended up on the blade of Jay Pandolfo at the bottom of the right circle, and Pandolfo backhanded a shot past the left leg of Tokarski to send the game to overtime tied at 2-2.
Springfield’s Cody Goloubef was whistled for slashing 51 seconds into overtime to set up a Norfolk power play. Vernace struck less than a minute later, taking a Jones feed at the right point and one-timing the puck through a screen and into the net at 1:43 for his fifth goal of the season.
Dustin Tokarski (25 shots, 23 saves) earned his fifth win of the season. David LeNeveu (21 shots, 18 saves) took the loss.
Norfolk was 2-6 on the power play. Springfield was 1-5.
