SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Trevor Smith and Dana Tyrell each had a goal and an assist as the Norfolk Admirals (7-2-0-1) defeated the Syracuse Crunch (4-3-1-1), 6-2, on Saturday night at the Onondaga County War Memorial at Oncenter. The Admirals season-long, seven-game road trip will continue on Friday night as they visit the Albany Devils with game time scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
Six different Admirals scored a goal in the victory, including Carter Ashton, who scored his team-leading ninth goal of the season in the first. Mike Vernace added three assists in the Admirals victory. Net minder Jaroslav Janus turned aside 29 of 31 shots he faced for his fourth victory of the season.
For the second straight contest, Carter Ashton gave the Admirals a 1-0 lead in the first. Deep in the Crunch zone, Charles Landry fed a cross ice pass to Carter Ashton. Ashton collected the pass and tipped in the shot in the back door behind Crunch net minder Jeff Drouin-Deslauriers at the 13:13 mark of the opening period.
Norfolk’s lead doubled to 2-0 with less than two minutes remaining in the opening period. Dana Tyrell picked up a turnover in the high-slot of the Crunch zone and slipped a shot under the pads of Deslauriers for his third goal of the season with 1:59 remaining in the first period.
With 33 seconds remaining in the opening period, Trevor Smith gave the Admirals a 3-0 lead. Smith picked up a loose rebound in front of the Crunch net and snuck a shot over the glove hand of Deslauriers for his fifth goal of the season.
The Admirals took a 4-0 lead less than two minutes into the second period. As the Admirals enjoyed a five-on-four man advantage, Richard Panik picked up a pass from Smith and fed it to the front of Deslauriers. The puck skipped off a skate in front of the net and snuck behind Deslauriers for Panik’s second goal of the season.
Syracuse chipped into the Admirals with back-to-back tallies. Nathan Smith got the Crunch on the board when he tipped in a shot by Nick Shaus over the glove of Janus to narrow to the Admirals lead to 4-1 at the 6:34 mark of the second period.
Former Admiral Mark Bell brought the Crunch to within two, 4-2, with his third goal of the season. Bell picked up a loose puck in front of the Admirals net and fired home a shot behind a sprawling Janus with 13:02 remaining in regulation.
Norfolk answered back to regain a three-goal lead, just 26 seconds later. J.T. Wyman skated through the slot and in behind a Crunch defenseman and slid a shot underneath Crunch goaltender Tarkki to give the Admirals a 5-2 lead with 13:28 remaining in the third.
Trevor Smith capped off the scoring when he gave the Admirals a 6-2 lead. Smith led an offensive rush into the Crunch zone. After skating behind a Crunch defenseman, Smith fed a pass through the slot to Mark Barberio. Barberio collected the pass and snapped a shot over the glove of Tarkki, with 9:05 remaining in regulation.
Jaroslav Janus (4-0-1) turned aside 29 of 31 shots for the victory. Jeff Drouin-Deslauriers (3-2-0) stopped 11 of 15 shots in the loss. Iiro Tarki (1-2-1) came in during the second period and stopped 9 of 11 shots but did not receive a decision.
Norfolk was 2 for 4 on the power play while Syracuse was 1 for 5.
The Admirals will now return home for a few days before heading back on the road. Next weekend, the Admirals will visit Albany on Friday, Bridgeport on Saturday and will conclude their longest road trip of the season in Providence on Sunday afternoon.
