Tokarski Shines as Admirals Sweep Season Series vs. Providence
NORFOLK, Va. – Dustin Tokarski stopped 26 of 28 shots and James Wright ended a lengthy goal drought with the eventual game-winning goal as the Norfolk Admirals (12-8-0-1) swept the four-game season series against the Providence Bruins (8-13-1-1) with a 3-2 victory on Saturday night at Norfolk Scope Arena. Next up for the Admirals is a meeting against their East Division Rivals, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, at Scope on Tuesday night.
After Pierre-Cedric Labrie's second period goal tied the game at 1-1, Norfolk received a goal and an assist each from Richard Panik and Wright to take the lead for good. Ondrej Palat recorded assists on both goals in the third period.
After a scoreless first period, Providence opened scoring 12:35 into the second stanza. Josh Hennessy sent a slap shot from the left circle low along the ice. A sliding Norfolk defender attempted to block the shot, but inadvertently deflected it over Tokarski’s left shoulder and into the net for a 1-0 Bruins lead.
Norfolk knotted the score at 1-1 less than five minutes later. Radko Gudas sent a shot from the right point. Labrie deflected the shot from the right circle down, through traffic and into the net past an unsuspecting Bruins goaltender Anton Khudobin. Labrie’s fifth goal of the season came at 16:32.
The Admirals took the lead for good 9:59 into the final frame. Wright took the puck from the right corner and spotted Ondrej Palat on top of the goalmouth near Khudobin's right leg. Palat shuffled the puck across the crease to Panik, who scored past Khudobin, glove-side for his third goal of the season and a 2-1 Norfolk lead.
The lead doubled less than three minutes later with Wright's first goal in 21 games this season. Panik held the puck behind the net before spotting Wright in the low slot. Wright connected on Panik's pass and sent a shot past Khudobin, stick-side at 12:40 for a 3-1 Admirals lead.
Providence closed to within a goal of tying the game with 14 seconds remaining as Craig Cunningham scored with Khudobin pulled in favor of the extra attacker. However, they could not find the equalizer as the Admirals held on for the 3-2 win.
Dustin Tokarski (7-5-0) stopped 26 of 28 shots for the victory. Anton Khudobin (7-10-1) stopped 30 of 33 shots for the loss.
Norfolk was 0-5 on the power play. Providence was 0-3.
