Lucky Bounce Moves Admirals One Win Away From Calder Cup Title
TORONTO, Ont. – Mike Kostka’s clearing attempt from center ice caromed off a stanchion and into the net 9:09 into overtime as the Norfolk Admirals defeated the Toronto Marlies, 1-0, in Game 3 of the Calder Cup Finals on Thursday night at Ricoh Coliseum. With the win, the Admirals lead the best-of-seven series, three games to zero.
Game 4 is set for Saturday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. at Ricoh Coliseum. The Admirals need just one more win in the series to claim the Calder Cup Title.
Kostka’s clearing attempt came near the Marlies’ logo on the center red line. It banked off a glass support just before the right corner of the Toronto zone. Marlies goaltender Ben Scrivens (11-5), who had stopped all 30 shots he had faced to that point, left his crease and went into the right corner in anticipation of playing the puck. However, the puck ricocheted to its left off the station and tricked across the goal line near the opposite post before Scrivens or the Toronto defense could corral it. That gave Kostka, a native of nearby Etobicoke, Ontario, his fourth goal of the 2012 Calder Cup Playoffs.
His shot was the only one that crossed a goal line in the contest. Dustin Tokarski (11-2) stopped all 21 shots he faced for his third shutout of the playoffs and his third shutout in Norfolk’s last five games. Tokarski has won his last seven consecutive games, allowing only five goals in the process. Norfolk has won nine games in a row overall.
After the Marlies had out-shot the Admirals, 11-6, in the first period, Norfolk had the upper hand in shots, 25-10, in the final two periods of regulation and in overtime.
Neither team scored on the power play, as Norfolk was 0-for-4 and Toronto was 0-for-6.
Game 4 is set for Saturday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. at Ricoh Coliseum. The game will be televised locally on WGNT CW27 and nationally on the CBS Sports Network.
