Admirals Shut Down Sound Tigers For Third Straight Win
NORFOLK – Emerson Etem and Luca Caputi each had three-point games and Frederik Andersen stopped 23 shots as the Norfolk Admirals (18-21-2-1) earned their third straight victory with a 5-0 shutout of the Bridgeport Sound Tigers (19-19-2-2) on Saturday night at Norfolk Scope Arena.
Etem netted two goals and an assist, while Caputi had a goal and two assists. Josh Brittain and Rod Pelley also scored for the Admirals, who out-shot the Sound Tigers, 35-23. Andersen (9-10-1) earned his second win in as many nights and stopped 60 of 61 Bridgeport shots in the weekend series.
Following the All-Star Break, the Admirals will hit the road for two games, facing off against the Adirondack Phantoms on Friday and the Bridgeport Sound Tigers on Saturday.
Norfolk took the lead 6:11 into the game. Caputi forced a turnover at the right point. His shot went behind the net to the left half wall, where Patrick Maroon out-worked a Bridgeport defender for possession. Maroon centered the puck to Etem in the slot, and Etem sent a wrist shot under a defender and between the right leg and blocker pad of Bridgeport goaltender Anders Nilsson for his 11th goal of the season.
The Admirals used a power play goal midway through the second period to double their lead. Sami Vatanen carried the puck into the attacking zone and sent a feed off the skate of a Bridgeport defender. The puck ended up in the slot, where Etem attempted a shot from his knees that also deflected off a visiting defender. The puck wound up on the blade of Caputi at the edge of the right circle, and Caputi sent a shot between Nilsson’s legs at 7:30 for his third goal of the season and a 2-0 Norfolk lead.
The lead grew to 3-0 just over seven minutes later on a skilled passing play. Dan Sexton entered the Bridgeport zone in the left wing. He threaded a pass between the legs of a Bridgeport defender in the slot to Brittain, and Brittain sent a shot over Nilsson’s right shoulder at 14:56 for his fifth goal of the season.
The third period featured a pair of late power play goals to close out scoring. At 12:47 of the third period, Vatanen received a pass from Caputi at the right circle. Vatanen shot the puck into the crease, where Etem used his stick to tip the shot past Nilsson for his 12th goal of the season. Pelley closed out scoring with 41 seconds left in regulation. He accepted a pass from Pierre-Luc Letourneau-Leblond and one-timed the puck past Nilsson for his second goal of the season.
Nilsson (7-10-0) stopped 30 of 35 shots for the loss.
Norfolk was 3-for-7 on the power play. Bridgeport was 0-for-3.
