ANAHEIM, Calif. – The Anaheim Ducks, NHL parent club of the Norfolk Admirals, have hired Jarrod Skalde (SKAL-dee) as an assistant coach for the Admirals, Ducks Executive Vice President and General Manager Bob Murray announced today. Skalde will work alongside Head Coach Trent Yawney and fellow assistant coach Marty Wilford with the Ducks' American Hockey League affiliate in Norfolk, Virginia.
Skalde joins the Admirals after earning the John Brophy Award as ECHL Coach of the Year in 2012-13 with the Cincinnati Cyclones. In his third season as bench boss with the club, Skalde led the Cyclones to a North Division title with a 42-22-8 record for 92 points – a 13-point improvement over the previous season. A 42-year-old native of Niagara Falls, Ontario, Skalde guided Cincinnati to a 110-79-27 record over three seasons. During that time, he saw 68 players earn promotions to the AHL resulting in nearly 900 games played. Prior to coaching the Cyclones, Skalde guided the IHL's Bloomington PrairieThunder as head coach during the 2008-09 and 2009-10 seasons.
Selected by the New Jersey Devils in the second round of the 1989 NHL Entry Draft, Skalde played 115 NHL games between New Jersey, Anaheim, Calgary, San Jose, Dallas, Chicago, Atlanta and Philadelphia. The forward's 575-game AHL career included stops in Utica, Saint John, Baltimore, Kentucky, Chicago, Philadelphia, Utah, Springfield and San Antonio. Skalde also played professionally in the IHL, Switzerland, Sweden, Japan and Slovenia during a 16-year career that spanned 1,071 games. A five-time team captain and seven-time assistant captain, Skalde won the 1990 Memorial Cup with the OHL's Oshawa Generals and the 2001 Turner Cup with the IHL's Orlando Solar Bears.
Skalde and his wife, Erin, have two children, 15-year-old daughter True and 10-year-old son Skate.
The Admirals are entering their second season as the AHL affiliate of the Ducks. In 2012-13, nine players donned both the Admirals and Ducks jerseys. Norfolk was one of the AHL's hottest teams down the stretch in 2012-13, posting the second-best record in the Eastern Conference from February 8 to the end of the season but falling just two points short of a berth in the 2013 Calder Cup Playoffs.
The 25th home opener in Admirals history is set for Friday, October 11, 2013, at Norfolk Scope Arena. Admirals hockey has a strong tradition in Hampton Roads – including four championships in the previous 24 seasons. Since 1989-90, 131 former Admirals players have graduated to play at least one game in the NHL, earning nearly 6,000 NHL points and 1,000 NHL goaltending victories in nearly 19,000 NHL games. Last month, eight former Admirals players and staff won the 2013 Stanley Cup with the Chicago Blackhawks, increasing the amount of former Admirals players or staff with their names on the Stanley Cup to 24 individuals a total of 32 times.
