#20: Fourteen Former Admirals Hoist Stanley Cup

The Admirals 25th home opener on October 11 is just 21 days away! So we are counting down the days recognizing 25 memorable moments in the 25 years of Admirals Hockey, in a segment we call 25 in 25. Each day we will highlight a great moment in the Admirals proud 25-year history to get you set for the 2013-14 home opener!

#20: December 22, 2012
On June 9, 2010, fourteen former Admirals players and several former Admirals staff members lifted the Stanley Cup when the Chicago Blackhawks defeated the Philadelphia Flyers 4-3 in overtime in Game Six of the Stanley Cup Finals at Philadelphia’s Wachovia Center. The Blackhawks claimed a four-games-to-two series victory.

While winning the Stanley Cup was a proud moment for Blackhawks fans, it was a moment which was remarkable for the history of Admirals hockey. To have fourteen former Admirals players raise the Stanley Cup at the same moment, really is a testament to the quality of hockey and the talent that plays here in Hampton Roads. Many local fans and media members alike refereed to that 2010 Blackhawks team as the “Chicago Admirals”, because of the large number of Admirals players who were on the roster and staff.

The following 14 former Admirals were on Chicago’s active roster during that 2010 postseason:

Bryan Bickell (2006-07), Dave Bolland (2006-07), Troy Brouwer (2006-07), Adam Burish (2006-07), Dustin Byfuglien (2005-06 – 2006-07), Corey Crawford (2005-06 – 2006-07), Jake Dowell (2006-07), Colin Fraser (2004-05 – 2006-07), Jordan Hendry (2005-06 – 2006-07), Duncan Keith (2003-04 – 2004-05), Danny Richmond (2005-06 – 2006-07), Brent Seabrook (2004-05), Jack Skille (2006-07), Kris Versteeg (2006-07).

Blackhawks Assistant Coach that season was Mike Haviland, who was the head coach of the Admirals from 2005-06 to 2006-07. Also winning the Stanley Cup were Admirals Hall of Famers Al MacIsaac (Inaugural Class of 2008) and Mark Bernard (Class of 2009). MacIsaac, who spent 16 years with the Admirals as a player, assistant coach, assistant general manager and general manager from 1991-92 to 2006-07, is the Blackhawks’ Senior Director of Hockey Administration and Assistant to the President. Bernard, who played with the Admirals from 1990-91 to 1992-93 and 1995-96 before serving as Executive Vice President and Assistant General Manager from 2006-07 to 2007-08, is the Blackhawks’ General Manager of Minor League Affiliations.

This past June, the Blackhawks faced the Boston Bruins in the Stanley Cup Finals. Facing a one-goal deficit in the final minutes of regulation, the Blackhawks received goals from two former Admirals forwards to earn the Game 6 victory. Bryan Bickell tied the game at 2-2 with 1:16 remaining in regulation. Less than 18 seconds later, Dave Bolland scored the go-ahead and eventual Cup-clinching goal to put Chicago ahead, 3-2. Both Bickell and Bolland made their professional debuts with the Admirals during the 2006-07 season. Bolland becomes the second former Admiral to be credited with a Stanley Cup-clinching goal (Travis Moen, Anaheim Ducks, 2007). Bolland and Bickell were also joined by former Admirals Duncan Keith, Brent Seabrook, Croey Crawford, Al MacIssac, Mark Bernard, and Jamie Kompon (former Hampton Roads Admirals player in 1989) who were a part of the 2012 Blackhawks championship.

Other Norfolk Admirals players who have their names engraved on the Stanley Cup over the years are as follows: Anton Babchuk (2005-06 Carolina Hurricanes), Aaron Downey (2007-08 Detroit Red Wings), Kent Huskins (2006-07 Anaheim Ducks), Andrew Hutchinson (2005-06 Carolina Hurricanes), Travis Moen (2006-07 Anaheim Ducks), Shawn Thornton (2006-07 Anaheim Ducks & Boston Bruins) and Valeri Zelepukin (1994-95 New Jersey Devils).
