O'Neill's Two Goals Lift Monarchs to 3-1 Win Over Admirals
MANCHESTER, NH - Brian O'Neill scored twice to help lead the Manchester Monarchs to a 3-1 victory over the Norfolk Admirals at the Verizon Wireless Arena Wednesday Morning
It was rise and shine for Manchester in the early morning game, as the team outshot the Admirals 16-3 in the opening period.
Goaltender Viktor Fasth was able to withstand all but one of the shots faced, as Manchester’s Andy Andreoff received a pass at the right circle and rifled a shot top shelf over Fasth’s left shoulder for the goal. The marker was scored with 4:55 remaining in the period, and the Monarchs took the 1-0 lead into the first intermission.
The Monarchs widened the gap early in the second period when Brian O’Neill quickly turned a backhander through the legs of Fasth to give Manchester a 2-0 lead. The second goal came with nearly two and a half minutes gone at the 2:27 mark.
Norfolk got on the board at 9:57 of the middle frame, when Max Friberg set up a Matt Beleskey who one-timed a shot in the slot past Monarch netminder Jean-Francois Berube to pull the Admirals within one.
Less than four minutes later, Manchester answered using a slap shot off the stick of O’Neill for his second goal of the contest. O'Neill's shot from right wing circle clipped high over the shoulder of Fasth for the third Monarchs goal of the game.
A few shifts following the goal, Fasth left the game with 4:58 remaining in the period, after stopping 27 of 30 shots. Norfolk's John Gibson came in relief as Manchester took the 3-1 lead into the second break.
Norfolk generated 10 shots on goal in the third period, but was unable to generate much offense as Berube and company went into shutdown mode to keep the Admirals in check, and secure the 3-1 victory for the Eastern Conference leading Monarchs.
Berube earns his first win of the season stopping 23 of 24 shots faced. Fasth takes the loss allowing three goals on 30 shots faced in 35 minutes of play. Gibson turned aside all 12 shots faced in a relief effort.
