11 Former Admirals Named to Olympic Rosters for 2014 Winter Games
NORFOLK, VA -- A total of 11 former Norfolk Admirals players have been named to 2014 Olympic rosters, and will compete in the Winter Games in Sochi Russia. Admirals alumni will represent five countries in next month's Olympic Winter Games.
Anaheim Ducks prospect Sami Vatanen, who appeared in three games for the Admirals this season, will make his first Olympic appearance for Finland. Also named were recent Admirals players Radko Gudas (Czech Republic), Ondej Palat (Czech Republic), and Richard Panik (Slovakia), who were all members of Norfolk's 2012 Calder Cup Championship team.
The following is a complete listing by country of former Admirals players named to Olympic rosters this week:
Canada (2) Mike Smith (G): Appeared in five games for the Admirals during the 2010-11 season posting a 1-4 record, 1.83 goals against average, and a .924 save percentage. He is currently the starting goaltender for the Phoenix Coyotes (NHL) and has earned 68 wins the past three seasons. .
Duncan Keith (D): A mainstay on the Chicago Blackhawks blue line, Keith played two seasons in Norfolk from 2003-05 totaling 51 points (17g, 34a). He has played the last nine seasons with the Blackhawks, having won Stanley Cup titles in 2010 and 2013. He has amassed 42 points in just 45 games played this season with Chicago.
Czech Republic (4) Ondej Palat (LW): Palat was a member of Norfolk's 2012 Calder Cup Championship team. He collected 30 points in 61 games played for the Admirals. Palat has 19 points in 42 games this season with the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Radko Gudas (D): Gudas played two seasons in Norfolk from 2010-2012 totaling 37 points (11g, 26a), 360 penalty minutes, and a +33 rating. He was a member of the 2012 Calder Cup Championship team, and currently plays for Tampa Bay (NHL) where he has registered 11 points and 85 penalty minutes in 37 games played this season.
Michal Barinka (D): Barinka called Norfolk home for three seasons from 2003-2006. He logged 29 points during his time with the Admirals before appearing in 34 career NHL games with Chicago. He currently plays in the Czech Republic for Vitkovice HC.
Lukas Krajicek (D): Krajicek made 15 appearances for the Admirals during the 2009-10 season logging six assists and a +1 rating before playing in 328 career NHL games split between Florida, Vancouver, Tampa Bay, and Philadelphia. He plays for Minsk Dynamo of the KHL this season.
Finland (2) Sami Vatanen (D): Vatanen registered three points (1g, 2a) in three appearances with the Admirals this season. In addition, he has nine points (4g, 5a) in 33 games played with Norfolk's NHL affiliate the Anaheim Ducks. Vatanen totaled 45 points (9g, 36a) last season with the Admirals. This will be Vatanen's first trip to Olympics. The 22-year old captained Finland in the 2011 World Junior Championships.
Lasse Kukkonen (D): Kukkonen collected 14 points (3g, 11a) in 59 games for the Admirals during the 2003-04 season. Kukkonen appeared in 159 NHL games split between Chicago and Philadelphia. He has posted a balanced 20 points (10g, 10a) with a +14 rating with Karpat (SM-Liiga) this season.
Latvia (1) Martins Karsums (RW): Karsums made 36 appearances for the Admirals in the 2009-10 season totaling 16 points. He played in 24 career NHL games split between Boston and Tampa Bay. Karsums currently plays in the KHL for Moscow Dynamo, where he has scored 14 goals and added eight assists.
Slovakia (2) Mlian Bartovic (F): Posted 24 points (10g, 14a) for the Admirals during the 2005-06 season. He joins Slovakia's Olympic roster having totaled 23 points in 41 games this season with Bratislava Slovan of the KHL.
Richard Panik (RW): Panik accrued 42 points in 69 career games with the Admirals from 2012-13. He was a member of Norfolk's 2012 Calder Cup Championship team. Panik made his mark in Admirals history with his heroic series-clinching goal against Connecticut on May 11, 2012. This season, he has scored 11 points in 35 games with Tampa Bay (NHL).
The 2014 Winter Games are scheduled to take place from February 7 thru Feb. 23.
Norfolk will be back on the road this weekend for a three games in three-day stretch which begins on Friday against the Portland in Lewiston, Maine. Fans can tune-in to the game on 1490 AM The Game, or on 1650 AM. The Admirals will return home on January 17 & 18 to battle the Worcester Sharks. Saturday, January 18 is Pink in the Rink. Come out and show your support in the fight against breast cancer. The Admirals will be skating on pink ice for that game. The Jan. 18 game is a ticket blackout game, meaning that coupons may not be used or redeemed for this game.
