Admirals Surrender Three Goals in Third, Lose 5-2 to Binghamton

NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk Admirals (34-22-1-7, 76 points) gave up three goals in the third period to the Binghamton Senators (31-29-1-2, 65 points), 5-2, on Friday night at Norfolk Scope.

Devante Smith-Pelly scored his team-leading 25th goal of the season and Chris Wagner recorded his eleventh of the season. Norfolk’s John Gibson (20-15-4) stopped 22 of 26 shots in the loss and his counterpart, Scott Greenham, saved 24 of 26 shots.

Norfolk took a 1-0 lead seven minutes into the opening period when Kevin Gagne found Chris Wagner across the zone in the right circle. Wagner snapped a shot low to the glove side over Greenham’s left leg at 7:02 of the first.

Binghamton responded with a blast from the left point by Mark Borowiecki. The Senators’ Patrick Mullen fed a pass to Borowiecki at the top of the zone that the defenseman drove through traffic and beyond Gibson. Binghamton knotted it up at 1-1 at 15:16 of the first.

In the second period, the Admirals regained the lead using a shorthanded forecheck to manufacture an opportunity in front of Greenham. Norfolk defenseman Steve Eminger dumped a puck in behind Greenham to maintain the zone. Max Sauve picked it off the boards and shuffled it to an awaiting Smith-Pelly at the goal front. Smith-Pelly settled it briefly before cracking a shot under Greenham’s glove at 11:40 for a shorthanded goal and a 2-1 Admirals' lead.

Once again, the Senators answered. Former Admiral Alex Grant, playing in his first game at Scope as a Senator, worked the puck across the top of the Norfolk zone to Fredrik Claesson. Claesson fired a low shot towards the net that David Dziurzynski deflected upward past Gibson. The Senators tied it at 2-2 with only 52 seconds left in the second period.

Early in the third period, Binghamton grabbed their first lead of the game on a power play opportunity. Mullen sent a pass across the slot to the far side for Shane Prince. Prince circled towards the far corner to screen Gibson and flicked a wrister off the far post to put Binghamton on top 3-2 at 2:50 of the third.

The Senators sealed the win at 16:33 of the third. Cole Schneider cut off a clearing attempt in the Norfolk zone and executed a give-and-go via Mark Stone that ended with a Schneider shot high into the far corner to make it 4-2.

Binghamton scored an empty-net goal at 18:55 of the third to take a 5-2 victory.

Norfolk didn’t convert on either of their two power plays while the Senators went 1-for-4 on the man-advantage.

Norfolk’s five-game home stand continues tomorrow night when they close out the two-game weekend set against the Binghamton Senators at 7:15 p.m. inside Scope. The game is the 14th Annual Muscular Dystrophy Association Jersey Auction, presented by PAPCO. Special edition game-worn jerseys will be auctioned off on the ice immediately after the game.
