ANAHEIM, Calif. – The Anaheim Ducks announced Saturday that the National Hockey League (NHL) club has recalled goaltender John Gibson from the Norfolk Admirals, Anaheim’s primary development affiliate in the American Hockey League (AHL).
Gibson, 20, returns to southern California after Ducks' netminder and former Admiral Frederik Andersen suffered a lower-body injury in Game 3 of Anaheim's playoff series with Los Angeles Thursday night. In his last trip to the NHL, Gibson made his debut on April 7 and shut out the Vancouver Canucks, 3-0. He became the youngest goalie (20 years, 297 days) to shut out an opponent in his NHL debut since Daren Puppa (20 years, 223 days) did so for Buffalo in 1985. He's also the first goalie of any age to earn a shutout in his NHL debut since 2009 and the first in Ducks' franchise history to hold an opponent scoreless in his Ducks' debut. For his efforts, Gibson received the Second Star of the Week honor for the week of April 7-13. The Pittsburgh native went 3-0-0 in his first three career games as an NHL goaltender and currently has a 1.33 goals-against average and .954 save percentage
The 6'3", 215-pound goaltender has been phenomenal in six games with Norfolk in the Calder Cup Playoffs. He led the Admirals past top-seeded Manchester in the first round and has 42 saves and 39 saves in two games against St. John's in the second round. Gibson's tied for the lead amongst playoff goalies in save percentage (.955) and is second in goals allowed per game (1.45). He earned a 21-17-4 regular season record and finished with a 2.34 goals-against average and .919 save percentage.
