TAMPA BAY, FL – The Tampa Bay Lightning, NHL parent club of the Norfolk Admirals, have recalled defenseman Matt Smaby from the Admirals, it was announced today by Lightning Executive Vice President & General Manager Brian Lawton.
Smaby, a 6-5, 220-pound native of Minneapolis, Minnesota, has skated in 19 games with Norfolk this season, recording two goals, three assists and 26 penalty minutes. The 24-year-old has appeared in 143 career AHL games with Norfolk and Springfield, tallying five goals, 21 assists and 135 penalty minutes.
Selected in the second round, 41st overall by the Lightning at the 2003 NHL Entry Draft, Smaby made his NHL debut with the Lightning in 2007-08, skating in 14 games. Smaby played three seasons for the University of North Dakota (2003-04 through 2005-06), captaining teams that reached the NCAA Frozen Four in consecutive seasons.
