Admirals Comeback Efforts Fall Just Short in Albany
Albany, N.Y. – Paul Szczechura and Pete Zingoni scored for Norfolk to tie the game early in the third period. However, Brett Carson netted the go-ahead goal midway through the final frame as the Norfolk Admirals fell to the Albany River Rats 4-2 on Sunday evening at the Times Union Center.
The River Rats (26-27-3-3) took a 2-0 lead after twenty minutes of play. Bryan Rodney opened scoring with a five-on-three power play goal 10:21 into the first period. He sent a slap shot from the top of the right circle that eluded the glove of Norfolk netminder Riku Helenius.
The Albany lead doubled less than five minutes later. Mike Angelidis sent a wrist shot from the right faceoff dot that sailed over the blocker of Helenius at 15:01.
After a scoreless second stanza, the Admirals (23-29-3-5) cut their deficit in half early through the final frame. Mike Lundin sent a shot from the high slot that Albany goaltender Daniel Manzato blocked. The rebound went to Paul Szczechura in the slot near the right hashmarks and Szczechura scored his thirteenth goal of the season with a shot past Manzato glove-side at 2:43.
Norfolk tied the game at two goals apiece just over three minutes later. Pete Zingoni shrugged off a River Rats defenseman and emerged from behind the goal line near the left corner. Before reaching the bottom of the left circle, he sent a backhand shot that went between the legs of Manzato and into the net. Zingoni’s third goal of the season came at 5:46.
However, the River Rats would fight back to re-take the lead midway through the final frame. Brett Carson sent a shot through traffic that eluded Helenius blocker-side at 10:14.
Jakub Petruzalek sealed the Albany victory with an empty net goal with eight seconds remaining.
Riku Helenius (26 shots, 23 saves) took the loss. Daniel Manzato (33 shots, 31 saves) earned the win.
Norfolk was 0-3 on the power play. Albany was 1-7.
