TAMPA BAY, Fla. – The Tampa Bay Lightning, NHL parent club of the Norfolk Admirals, have assigned center Paul Szczechura (sha-HUHR-uh) to the Admirals, Lightning Executive Vice President and General Manager Brian Lawton announced today. The Admirals also announced that they have signed defenseman Ryan McGinnis to a Professional Tryout Contract (PTO).
Szczechura, 24, a 5-foot-10, 184-pound center from Brantford, Ontario, has appeared in 37 games with the Lightning this season and has scored two goals and three points.
Szczechura appeared in Norfolk’s first 14 games this season. At the time of his recall on November 11, he led the team in points with 14 and assists with eight while also ranking third on the team in goals with six. Szczechura also had a power-play goal, a shorthanded goal and an even rating. Szczechura has played in 114 career AHL games between Norfolk and the Iowa Stars. He has amassed 38 goals and 81 points.
Szczechura made his NHL debut with the Lightning last season, playing in 31 games and recording four goals with nine points. He ranked second among Tampa Bay rookies in goals, assists and points. In 68 career NHL games with the Lightning he has six goals and 12 points. Originally undrafted, the Lightning signed Szczechura as a free agent on April 24, 2008.
McGinnis, 22, is a 6-foot-2, 202-pound defenseman from Flint, Michigan. He has spent the entire 2009-10 season thus far with the Kalamazoo Wings of the ECHL, recording five goals, 23 assists and 28 points in 42 games. He ranks fourth among all ECHL defensemen in points. The second-year pro also ranks fourth among all K-Wings players in points and is tied for the team lead in assists. In 84 career ECHL games between Kalamazoo and the Florida Everblades, McGinnis has seven goals and 33 assists for 40 points.
Last season, McGinnis also appeared in 27 American Hockey League games with the Albany River Rats, recording five assists. He appeared in 287 games over a five-year junior hockey career between the OHL’s Plymouth Whalers and Oshawa Generals, recording 17 goals and 97 assists for 114 points. He was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in 2005 in the sixth round (184th overall).
The Admirals will conclude their seven-game road trip this afternoon against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. The puck drops at 3:00 p.m. All games are broadcast on STAR 1310-AM, star1310.com and ahllive.com.
