NORFOLK, Va. – Newly named captain Chris Durno had two assists, but his Norfolk Admirals (17-6-5-1) fell to the Albany Devils (12-16-0-0), 4-3, in overtime on Friday night at Norfolk Scope Arena. The same two teams will meet tomorrow night at Scope in Toy Toss Night, Admirals trading card giveaway night and post-game skate night.
James Wright, Johan Harju and Alex Berry scored for Norfolk while Dustin Tokarski made 27 saves.
The Admirals jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the game’s first five minutes. Wright scored his seventh goal of the season off a Matt Fornataro rebound at 2:38. Harju then netted his team-leading fourteenth of the season at 5:04 with a shot from the right corner.
Albany cut their deficit to 2-1 at 12:55 of the opening period on a Michael Swift goal. The Devils then tied the game at 2-2 just 2:45 into the second stanza after Tyler Eckford’s neutral zone blast was deflected by an Admirals defender in the slot.
Norfolk re-claimed the lead 15:56 into the second period. Berry sent a shot from the right corner through traffic and past a screened Albany goaltender Jeff Frazee for his ninth goal of the season and a 3-2 Admirals lead.
The Devils tied the game at 3-3 with only 2:03 remaining in regulation on a Matt Anderson goal.
Back-to-back penalties to Blair Jones and Paul Szczechura four seconds apart in the final minute of regulation gave Albany a five-on-three advantage. The Admirals killed both penalties, earning a point in the standings by sending the game to overtime. However, Vladimir Zharkov scored 2:19 into the extra session to give the visitors the additional point in the standings with a 4-3 victory.
Dustin Tokarski (31 shots, 27 saves) took the loss. Jeff Frazee (33 shots, 30 saves) got the win.
Norfolk was 0-6 on the power play. Albany was 0-5.
The Admirals and Devils will square off once again tomorrow night at Scope at 7:15 p.m.
The Admirals' Annual Toy Toss will take place tomorrow night. Admirals fans are asked to bring new stuffed toys to the game to throw onto the ice after the Admirals score their first goal. The Toy Toss is an official U.S. Marine Corps Toys For Tots event and a Norfolk Holidays In The City Event.
Also on Saturday, Admirals fans will receive the first set of Admirals trading cards and can participate in a post-game skate with the team following the game. A limited number of skates will be available or fans may bring their own skates.
