Admirals Take Over Second Place with 4-2 Victory at Charlotte
CHARLOTTE, N.C., Behind two goals by Blair Jones, the Norfolk Admirals defeated the Charlotte Checkers 4-2, at the Time Warner Cable Arena on Sunday evening. With their third consecutive win, Norfolk moved two points ahead of Charlotte for second place in the American Hockey League’s East Division. The Admirals will return to home ice Tuesday night as the Syracuse Crunch invade Norfolk Scope Arena. Game time is 7:15 p.m.
Radko Gudas broke a 2-2 deadlock with a late second period power play goal. Matt Fornataro also scored in the Admirals victory. Dustin Tokarski picked up his second win in as many nights by stopping all 12 shots he faced in relief of Cedrick Desjardins, who left the game with an apparent injury 14:53 into the second period.
The Checkers opened the scoring with a goal just over ten seconds into the game. Oskar Osala broke past the Admirals defense and fired a shot on net on Desjardins, who stopped the original shot. However, Brett Sutter buried the rebound to give the Checkers the 1-0 lead just 12 seconds after the opening faceoff.
Matt Fornataro knotted the game at 1-1 with a rebound goal. Troy Milam fired a slap shot from just inside the Charlotte blue line that was turned aside by Charlotte’s goaltender Justin Pogge. The rebound bounced right to Fornataro who then buried the shot over the sprawling Pogge at 16:06 of the opening period.
Brett Carson gave the Checkers a 2-1 lead with his first goal of the season just over two minutes into the second period. Just seconds after Troy Milam was whistled for hooking, Zac Dalpe won the faceoff in the Admirals zone back to Bryan Rodney. Rodney sent a pass to Carson on the blue line. Carson fired a slap shot past Desjardins at 2:34 of the second period.
The Admirals tied the game at 2-2 with Blair Jones’ 11th goal of the season. Paul Szczechura put a shot on goal that was turned aside by Pogge. Jones followed the shot up by banking the rebound off of Pogge’s pads into the net at the 4:41 mark of the second period.
Radko Gudas put the Admirals ahead for good with a power play goal. After receiving a pass from James Wright, Gudas put the Admirals ahead 3-2 when he fired a wrist shot from the top of the right circle that beat Pogge stick-side at 15:21 of the middle stanza.
Norfolk doubled their lead 4-2 with an empty net goal by Blair Jones. After Charlotte pulled their goaltender for an extra-attacker, Jones received a pass from Vernace and skated up ice on a breakaway. The goal was Jones’ second of the night and capped off the scoring at the 18:58 mark of the third period.
Cedrick Desjardins turned aside 21 of 23 shots before leaving with apparent injury. Dustin Tokarski turned aside all 12 shots he faced in the victory. Justin Pogge shouldered the loss despite stopping 33 of 36 shots.
Norfolk was 1 of 5 on the man-advantage. Charlotte was 1 for 6 on the power play.
