ADMIRALS WINNING STREAK REACHES 5 WITH SHOOTOUT VICTORY
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - Paul Szczechura scored a goal in regulation and the winning conversion in the shootout while Dustin Tokarski turned aside 28 shots as the Norfolk Admirals (24-10-7-2) defeated the Binghamton Senators (22-18-2-3), 3-2 in a shootout, on Friday night at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena. The Admirals have won a season-high five games in a row and will look to continue their winning ways Saturday night as they visit the Syracuse Crunch. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
Dustin Tokarski turned aside 28 shots, including three in the shootout, to extend his winning-streak to four games. Matt Fornataro registered his 12th goal of the season to tie the game at 2-2 and to send the game into overtime.
Jim O’Brien gave the Senators an early 1-0 lead with his 13th goal of the season. O’Brien skated through the Admirals zone and fired a wrist shot from between the circles over the glove hand of Tokarski at 6:31 of the first period.
Less than a minute later, the Admirals knotted the game at 1-1 with a goal of their own. Paul Szczechura fired a shot from the low-slot on Senators goaltender Robin Lehner. Lehner turned the first shot aside, but the rebound bounced right to Szczechura who buried the shot over the sprawled out Lehner at 7:14 of the first period.
The Senators went ahead 2-1 with a power play goal midway through the second stanza. Ryan Keller zipped a pass to teammate Corey Locke who then fired a pass to the short side of Tokarski. Kaspars Daugavins found the puck and snuck a shot passed Tokarski at the 9:29 mark of the second period.
Matt Fornataro knotted the game at 2-2 with a power play goal midway through the third period. Fornataro found the puck in a crowd in front of the Senators net and jammed it passed a scrambling Lehner at the 7:15 mark of the third period.
After a scoreless overtime period, the Admirals went 3 for 4 in the shootout while Tokarski turned aside 3 of 5 Binghamton attempts to give the Admirals the 3-2 victory. Paul Szczechura scored the game-winning goal after Johan Harju and Marc-Antoine Pouliot each scored to begin the shootout period.
Dustin Tokarski turned aside 28 of 30 shots for his fourth-consecutive victory. Robin Lehner stopped 21 of 23 shots in the setback.
Norfolk was 1 for 3 on the power play. Binghamton was 1 of 5 on the power play.
The Admirals will continue their four-game in six night road trip Saturday night as they visit the Syracuse Crunch. Game time is 7:30 p.m. After the rematch with the Crunch, the Admirals will travel to Portland and Manchester for games on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively.
The Admirals will return home January 28th and 29th as the Springfield Falcons venture into Scope. The game against the Falcons on Friday Jan. 28th will be a Zamboni Bank Giveaway night presented by JPM Financial Services, John's Tax Service, WAVY-TV10 & FOX43. That night will also be Norfolk Public School night at Norfolk Scope. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
