SYRACUSE, NY.; Despite putting up 19 shots in the third period, the Norfolk Admirals (24-11-7-2) fell to the Syracuse Crunch (16-24-1-4) 3-2 at the Onondaga County War Memorial at Oncenter on Saturday evening. The Admirals will look to return to their winning ways on Tuesday evening as they visit the Portland Pirates. Game time is 6:30 p.m.
Matt Fornataro registered a goal for the second consecutive night and Marc-Antoine Pouliot also scored in the defeat. The loss snaps an Admirals five-game winning streak.
The Admirals jumped out to an early 1-0 with a power play tally by Matt Fornataro. Marc-Antoine Pouliot fired a pass to Fornataro standing beside the net. Fornataro then wristed a shot passed Crunch goaltender Jean-Philippe Levasseur for his second goal of the road trip at 8:22 of the first period.
With less than five minutes remaining in the first period, the Crunch responded with a goal of their own. their own. Mark Mitera fired a shot from the left side point that deflected off the stick of teammate John Mitchell passed Admirals goaltender Mike Smith at 17:41 of the opening stanza.
The Crunch took a 2-1 lead just over two minutes into the second period. Stefan Chaput received a pass from teammate Patrick Maroon and fired a shot over the left shoulder of Smith at the 2:34 mark of the period.
Marc-Antoine Pouliot knotted the game at 2-2 with his 11th goal of the season just over midway through the second period. Johan Harju led a two-on-one offensive rush into the Crunch zone. Harju sent a pass to Pouliot in front of net. Pouliot fired a shot into a wide-open net as Levasseur couldn\'t recover in time. The goal came at 9:57 of the middle stanza.
Three minutes later, Nigel Williams gave the Crunch a 3-2 lead. Williams fired a shot from the blue-line that deflected off the post and behind Smith for the 3-2 lead at the 11:56 mark of the second period.
Mike Smith turned aside 26 of 29 shots in the defeat. Jean-Philippe Levasseur stopped 41 of 43 shots in the victory.
The Admirals were 1 for 4 on the power play. The Crunch were 0 of 3 on the power play.
The Admirals will continue their four-game in six-night road trip Tuesday night as they visit the Portland Pirates. Game time is 6:30 p.m. Norfolk will conclude their four-game road trip Wednesday night as they visit Manchester Monarchs.
