Admirals Wrap Up Road Trip With 4-2 Loss in Manchester

NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk Admirals (24-13-7-2) wrapped up a four-game road trip with a 4-2 loss to the Manchester Monarchs (28-16-1-3) on Wednesday night at the Verizon Wireless Arena. The Admirals return to Scope on Friday and Saturday nights to face off against the Springfield Falcons.

Alex Berry and Matt Fornataro staked Norfolk to a 2-1 first period lead before the Monarchs netted three unanswered goals – all on the power play. Goaltender Dustin Tokarski saw his personal four-game winning streak snapped as he stopped 28 of 32 shots.

Norfolk took a 1-0 lead midway through the first period on Berry’s eleventh goal of the season. Berry entered the attacking zone along the left wing and attempted a pass from the bottom of the left circle across the goalmouth to a teammate. However, the pass deflected off a Monarch in the crease and went into the net at 9:36.

Manchester leveled the score at 1-1 just under three minutes later. Andrew Campbell attempted a shot from the left point that went wide of the net. However, Corey Elkins retrieved the puck behind the net and wrapped a shot around the post and past the stick of a diving Tokarski at 12:30.

The Admirals briefly re-claimed the lead less than five minutes later. Radko Gudas sent a shot from the right point that was deflected and bounced off Monarchs goaltender Jeff Zatkoff. The rebound went directly to Fornataro, who shot it into the net for his fourteenth goal of the season at 18:07.

The lead was short-lived, however, as James Wright was whistled for holding at 18:32 and the Monarchs took only six seconds to score on the ensuing power play. Viatcheslav Voynov sent a shot off a faceoff from the blueline that was deflected into the slot by Monarchs captain Marc-Andre Cliche to level the score at 2-2 at 18:38.

Manchester used another power play goal to take the lead late in the second period. Voynov sent a pass from the right point to Oscar Moller at the left point. Moller one-timed the puck past a screened Tokarski at 18:02 to put the Admirals behind 3-2.

The Monarchs closed out scoring with Cliche's second goal of the contest 12:45 into the third period. Tokarski attempted to clear the puck out of the Norfolk zone while killing a penalty. However, Cliche blocked the clearing attempt in the right circle, found the loose puck by the side of the net, and wrapped a shot around the post behind the left leg of Tokarski and into the net for a 4-2 Manchester lead.

Dustin Tokarski (32 shots, 28 saves) took the loss. Jeff Zatkoff (36 shots, 34 saves) earned the victory.

Norfolk was 0-4 on the power play. Manchester was 3-5.
