Tokarski Shuts Down Penguins as Admirals Leave Pennsylvania with Two Wins
WILKES-BARRE TOWNSHIP, Penn. – Dustin Tokarski stopped all 27 shots he faced and Paul Szczechura’s goal with 7.6 seconds remaining in the second period was the difference as the Norfolk Admirals defeated the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, 2-0, on Saturday night at the Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza. The Admirals now lead the best-of-seven East Division Semifinals series two games to none with the series shifting to Norfolk for Games Three, Four and Five (if necessary) on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday nights at Scope.
Marc-Antoine Pouliot also scored for the Admirals. Norfolk’s penalty kill remained perfect by stopping all five Penguins power plays and is ten-for-ten in the series.
It appeared that the game would be scoreless entering the third period, as Tokarski had stopped all 17 shots he faced and Penguins goaltender Brad Thiessen had stopped all 15 shots he had faced. However, Matt Fornataro picked off a clearing attempt in the neutral zone in the waning seconds of the second period. The puck wound up on the stick of Szczechura in the slot. Szczechura’s first shot was blocked in the low slot. However, he found the rebound and chipped a shot over the glove of Thiessen with only 7.6 seconds remaining in the second period.
That was all the offense Tokarski would need. He stopped all 11 third period shots he faced and Pouliot added an empty-netter with 5.3 seconds remaining as the Admirals claimed the 2-0 win.
Dustin Tokarski (27 shots, 27 saves) earned his first pro playoff shutout in his second pro playoff game. Brad Thiessen (26 shots, 25 saves) was saddled with the loss.
Both teams were 0-5 on the power play.
