Admirals Set Sights on Battle with Bears






NORFOLK, Va. – After opening the regular season with a pair of thrilling wins over the Charlotte Checkers last week, the Norfolk Admirals will face off against the Hershey Bears in a home-and-home set this weekend.

The Admirals dropped the puck on the 2011-12 season by defeating the Charlotte Checkers in a pair of games at Norfolk Scope Arena. Carter Ashton's second goal of the game came 1:55 into overtime as Norfolk erased a two-goal deficit to defeat Charlotte, 6-5, on Friday night in the season opener. The following night, Cory Conacher had a three-point game – including the go-ahead goal in the third period – as the Admirals defeated the Checkers, 4-3. The Admirals now lead the GEICO Challenge Cup Series, two games to none.

Week Two of the regular season gets underway on Friday night at Scope as the Admirals battle the Hershey Bears at 7:30 p.m. Friday night's game is the first Military Appreciation Night of the 2011-12 season. Red Level tickets (normally $17.50 on game nights) will be available for just $9 at the Norfolk Scope Box Office for all active or retired military, their dependants and reservists with valid military identification. More details are listed below. The following night, the teams travel to Pennsylvania for a 7:00 p.m. puck drop at Giant Center on Saturday night.

ADMIRALS’ LOG
  • The Admirals improved to 6-5-0-0-1 in season-opening contests since joining the American Hockey League in the 2000-01 season. They also improved to 3-3-0-0-0 when the first game of the regular season is played at Norfolk Scope Arena, and 7-4-1-0-0 in the first home game of the regular season.
  • Earlier today, Carter Ashton was named the Reebok/AHL Player of the Week for the period ending October 9.
  • The line of rookies Carter Ashton (2g, 2a), Cory Conacher (1g, 3a) and Tyler Johnson (2g, 1a) lead the Admirals in scoring through two games. Ashton and Conacher lead the AHL in rookie scoring while Johnson is tied for third with three other skaters.
  • Ashton leads or is tied for the AHL lead in goals (3), rookie points (4), power play goals (2), first goals (2), overtime goals (1) and game-winning goals (1).
  • Mark Barberio (0g, 4a) joins Ashton and Conacher atop the Admirals scoring charts. Barberio is also the leading scorer among all AHL defensemen and is tied for the AHL lead in assists.
  • Fifteen of 18 skaters have recorded at least one point for Norfolk. No other AHL team has more than 13 different scorers.



MILITARY APPRECIATION NIGHT
Friday's matchup against the Bears will be the first Military Appreciation Night of 2011-12. Carter Ashton had an eventful beginning to his first full professional season. After scoring the first goal of the 2011-12 Admirals campaign, Ashton later netted the overtime game-winning goal as Norfolk defeated Charlotte, 6-5, on Friday night. The following evening, Ashton again opened scoring and assisted on the game-winning goal as the Admirals topped the Checkers, 4-3. Ashton leads or is tied for the AHL lead in goals (3), rookie points (4), power play goals (2) first goals (2), overtime goals (1) and game-winning goals (1) while tying for third in points (4) in the league. Ashton becomes the sixth Norfolk Admirals player to be named the AHL Player of the Week and the first since Johan Harju in November 2010.
