WILKES-BARRE, Penn. – With four unanswered third period goals, the Norfolk Admirals (9-6-0-1) defeated the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (9-3-1-1), 5-3, on Saturday night at the Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza. Norfolk’s road trip continues next Friday and Saturday nights as they visit the St. John’s IceCaps in St. John’s, Newfoundland.
Mark Barberio had a goal and two assists while Cory Conacher added two third period tallies in the victory. Radko Gudas and Dana Tyrell each added a goal, while Jeff Dimmen collected two assists in the contest. Goaltender Dustin Tokarski made 23 saves for his fifth victory of the season.
The Penguins took an early 1-0 lead just 1:13 after the opening faceoff. After an Admirals turnover deep in the defensive zone, Penguins forward Jason Williams skated out from behind the Admirals net and tucked the puck under the right pad of Tokarski.
Norfolk knotted the game at 1-1 on a shorthanded tally by defenseman Radko Gudas. Dana Tyrell skated in one-on-one versus a Penguins defenseman. Tyrell fed a trailing Gudas with a pass in the slot. Gudas sent a slap shot over the catching hand of Penguins netminder Brad Thiessen for his third tally of the season with 4:59 remaining in the first.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton took a two-goal lead with two goals in 56 seconds to begin the second period. Ben Street gave the Penguins a 2-1 lead when he fired a shot off the post and in behind Tokarski for a power play goal.
Less than a minute later, the Penguins extended their lead to 3-1. Niko Dimitrakos led a Penguins break into the Admirals' zone and fired a slap shot short side on Tokarski for his fourth goal of the season at 1:52.
Cory Conacher brought the Admirals to within one goal of the Penguins with a third period power play goal. After a shot from the point by defenseman Mark Barberio, Conacher picked up the loose rebound and buried it in the wide open net for his sixth goal of the season, just 1:56 into the third period.
The Admirals knotted the game at 3-3 with another power play tally. Defenseman Mark Barberio sent a slap shot from the center of the left face off circle that found its way behind Thiessen with 11:34 remaining in regulation.
Norfolk took its first lead of the contest with 8:34 remaining in regulation. Dana Tyrell gave the Admirals a 4-3 lead when he skated into the Penguins' zone and slipped a shot from the left faceoff circle through the legs of Thiessen for his fourth goal of the season.
Cory Conacher netted an empty-net, power play tally with 2.4 seconds remaining to cap off the scoring.
Dustin Tokarski (5-4-0) made 23 saves on 26 shots for the victory. Brad Thiessen (9-3-0) made 19 saves on 23 shots in the loss.
Norfolk was 2-4 on the power play. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton was 1-5 with the man advantage.
